Financial Education

From a Teen's Perspective

As a 17 year old who has just entered her senior year of high school, while searching for a college to attend, the thought of money can be overwhelming. The cost of tuition, housing, sorority dues, food plans, and so much more is enough to make your head spin. That is why it is so important to become fluent on how your finances work before you ever leave for college.

Over the past two years, I have worked a summer job. This has helped me to save money for college, while also having money to spend when shopping or going out with friends. This brings me to tip #1: If you do not have a checking account and a savings account, I recommend both. Having a checking account along with a savings account helps me save money without thinking about it. With my checking account, I have quick access to money through my debit card; but with my savings account, I don’t! It is easy to deposit a percentage of your paycheck into your savings account, putting that sum of money out of quick reach. This allows you to still deposit the money you want to spend into your checking account, while also building up savings. Tip #2: You are never too young to budget! It is extremely important to learn how to budget… especially as a girl who loves to get her nails done! Learning to budget doesn’t have to be hard; it’s simple! It is all about keeping track of where your money goes and making a list of your needs and wants.

One thing I find very helpful and convenient is the FirstCNB mobile banking app! I love being able to see how much money is in my checking and savings accounts at all times. I can also see a list of purchases I have made, as well as deposits I have made into my account. This allows me to keep track of where my card is used and prevent fraud.

Developing GOOD money management skills will impact so much of life – both now and in the future.
