Cyber Security

Technology is both exciting and scary at the same time. Technology keeps us connected to each other, provides advancements to modern medicine, and provides both education and entertainment. However, technology also offers criminals an avenue to steal personal information.

Although technology is fast-paced and ever-evolving, cyber criminals have been able to maintain that same speed. Knowledge and awareness is your best defense against these attacks.

Computers and mobile devices are often infected with malware. Malware refers to software programs designed to damage or hijack a computer system. There are several types of malware. It can be transmitted through email attachments, downloads, and links. Some warning signs of malware include slow performance, computer crashes, decreased battery life, or seeing new apps or icons on your homepage. If you suspect you have malware, do not enter any personal information and update your security software. You may also take your device to a reputable tech support center.

Another threat to your personal information is known as phishing. We’re not talking about your favorite summer pastime. Phishing is when cyber criminals send emails pretending to be from a reputable company attempting to obtain your personal information. Often times, they will try to entice, warn, or threaten you. They usually contain a link to a fake website, which looks legitimate. Phishing emails try to create a sense of urgency. They may contain spelling or grammar mistakes.

While phishing refers to emails, there are attempts via SMS or voice messages to lure you into providing them with personal information. If you suspect that you are being phished, you can find a contact number for the company the criminals are portraying and call them directly. Do not call using the information they are providing you. In this age of technology, you can search for the company’s contact information and inquire about the request you’ve received.
